Run for council and give yourself a raise

Six Nations band council has approved an honoraria increase for themselves courtesy of program dollars attached to a health agreement. Now it appears the $5,000 increase, a huge 11% increase for councillors and 7% for the elected chief, comes from either the administration fee dollars or “governance” dollars attached to the agreement. In comparison, by the way, this year the federal civil servants received a 1.25% wage increase (on average) per year as part of a four year agreement. Band council’s $65,000 increase will push the annual cost for council over $700,000 after last year’s total expenses hit $648,873 (including travel expenses and life and health insurance).
