Federal budget 2017: $ verses children

All eyes are on Ottawa today with Justin Trudeau’s second budget coming down. And indigenous people will be watching to see if Trudeau does invest in their children. Both the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and children’s advocate Cindy Blackstock are pushing the Liberal government to end discriminatory practices and increase funding for First Nations child welfare services in today’s budget. The push is coming on the heels of the 10th anniversary of filing a human rights complaint on the issue only, to find once the landmark findings came down from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Trudeau’s government failed to comply…twice! Programs available through provincial agencies are more than out of reach, they are claiming lives. Funding for suicide prevention, supports, social services are all suffering, not funding cuts, funding…
