Founding people are who?

As Canada celebrates its 150 years here a movement is afoot to recognize indigenous peoples in Canada as one of 3 founding people of the country. Former AFN leader Phil Fontaine called the idea the ultimate expression of reconciliation that Canada can extend to first peoples. We tend to disagree. The ultimate expression of reconciliation would begin with settling of outstanding treaty and land rights issues. Fontaine and his partner Kathleen Mahoney say the designation would protect indigenous languages, cultures, history, traditions and laws just as they are for the British and the French. Canadians are already chatting about what a good idea it would be to recognize them right along with the French and British as three founding peoples.
