First Nations to get long term funding program

Ottawa will no longer require First Nations with good financial track records to account to Ottawa for every federal dollar they receive. That includes spending on things such as health care, education and social services. Its a new program being considered by the Trudeau government. The new plan, similar to a transfer would guarantee long-term funding. the federal government plans to have it instituted to 100 First Nations by April, 2019. Jane Philpott, the Minister of Indigenous Services, says it is about a new fiscal relationship with Canada’s Indigenous people. Under former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper legislation was passed that required First Nations to submit their audited consolidated financial statements and information about salaries and expenses to the government for posting on the Indigenous Affairs website.
