Six Nations teenager is Miss Teenage Ontario

The Six Nations teenager has become the first Indigenous girl to win the Miss Teenage Ontario competition and she is full of excitement and eager for the Miss Teenage Canada competition. But it wasn’t always that way. Last April Aleria almost became another First Nation statistic after a suicide attempt nearly ended her life. “I did my own suicide attempt and it breaks my heart, I could have become just another statistic, and I was given a second chance,” said Aleria. The numbers are staggering when it comes to suicides in First Nations. According to the Center for Suicide Awareness, the suicide rate for First Nation Females is 35 per 100,000 compared to 5 per 100,000 for non-Indigenous females….
