Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week he is overhauling the way the federal government relates to Indigenous people. It’s taken 150 years since Canada became a country on Indigenous lands to realize there never was a relationship with Indigenous Peoples. There was only a plan to steal the land. Now, 150 years and millions of dollars in court cases later, in a speech last Wednesday being heralded as historic, he announced he will develop a legal framework to guarantee the rights of Indigenous peoples in all government decision making .  He says Canada needs to implement Indigenous rights and stop forcing Indigenous Peoples to turn to the courts to enforce their rights.
