The Liberal path to Indigenous nationhood has become clearer after Budget 2018 came down yesterday. The budget contained alot of goodies for Indigenous peoples…to the tune of another $5 billion being spent on Indigenous people concerns. There’s $173 million more to eliminate long-term drinking water advisories on reserve (that’s on top of the $1.8 billion pledged in 2016). There’s money for child welfare ($1.4 billion over six years), $1.5 billion to support separate housing strategies for First Nation reserves, Inuit and Métis communities. That includes $300 million in new funding. And there’s $1.5 billion over five years to Indigenous health-care services. All pointing to a move to turn bands into nations.
