Through whose eyes?

There’s something almost frightening with the onslaught of legislative change Ottawa is pushing on First Nation leadership across Canada. AFN leader Perry Bellegarde is pushing chiefs to get involved in a whole plate full of legislation from protecting and promoting Indigenous languages, to implementing the government’s cannabis legislation, to the biggest change to hit Indigenous People in Canada, the restoration of Indigenous rights. And one has to question if they are ready? First Nations leadership has to understand the generational impacts of all the changes being pushed their way including the kingpin, rights that most band councils have never had to deal with since their creation, simply because, they were not created to defend Indigenous rights, only push pens on paper and implement Indian Act policies set by a government…
