Peaceful demonstration calls on Canada to right historic wrong in imposing band system at Six Nations

OHSWEKEN, SIX NATIONS-A peaceful demonstration is taking place outside the Six Nations Band Administration building this morning ( May 9 2018). Derek Sandy  says they are there to raise awareness.

He said “it is a peaceful gathering. This is one of the many steps we are going to take to further our voices. ”

He read the group’s statement:  “The band administration was imposed here at gunpoint almost 100 years ago without community consultation or consent. It continues to make and enforce decisions against our ways to the detriment of our people. It is a colonial structure imposed  and planted by cultural imperialism and her Majesty’s  agents, Canada, needs to right this historic wrong.

“We urge, her Majesty’s agents, Canada, to initiate and  to undertake authentic consultation  and dialogue with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council to address our issues and concerns so that we move forward in the true spirit of real  healing and reconciliation.”

He said he expects more people to turn out. He says it is a peaceful gathering.

Six Nations Elected Chief Ava Hill is not at Six Nations for the next two days. She is on a two day campaign tour for the Ontario Regional Chief’s position. She announced two weeks ago that she was seeking  the Ontario Regional Chief’s spot now held by Isadore Day.
