Five seeking AFN top job

Perry Bellegarde, the current National Chief of The Assembly of First Nations has announced he will be seeking re-election. Bellegarde has been chief since 2014. He says there has been substantial progress over the past three and a half years. He says the federal government has given close to $17 billion to First Nations priorities including on-reserve education and child welfare, they have also committed to passing a law to implement the UN declaration on the rights of Indigenous peoples. The assembly election will be held on July 25th. Bellegarde is facing two challengers who accuse Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government of failing to consult or take action to help communities become independent.
