Residential School holiday or National Indigenous Day?

Everyone is certainly talking about it. Just days before announcing his attention to seek re-election Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to create a national statutory holiday commemorating the legacy of Canada’s Indigenous residential schools. A day to remember and reflect on a dark chapter in Canada’s history. A day to think about the stealing of children, indoctrinization into Euro-Canadian and Christian ways, of oppression that continues. Is that really what Indigenous people want to see? Is a statutory holiday is an appropriate way to mark the legacy of residential schools? Without question it needs to be remembered and the federal government is deserving of praise for suggesting it But without being politically incorrect it is hard to argue that a statutory holiday may not be appropriate,especially since it is one…
