Six Nations proposed election code cuts districts and council members

By Justin Lethbridge Writer Limitations in a new Six Nations Election Code could put an entirely new face on band council if approved in a community vote that begins this weekend. The proposed election code, the fourth in a series of proposed codes over the years, calls for eradicating the districts installing at large voting for an elected chief and nine councillors instead of 12. It also limits the number of terms an elected official can sit to two. That could see all but four of the members of the current council barred from running in the November band elections.
