Landmark Opera tells story of Beothuk Nation

A team of Indigenous artists from across Canada have put together a landmark Opera telling the story of the last member of the Beothuk Nation, Shanawdithit. A well known story in Newfoundland and Labrador, the story of Shanawdithit has only been told from a colonial perspective which is something the opera hopes to change. “It’s so important to tell the story.” Sto:lo mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, who plays Shanawdithit, told the Turtle Island News. “Especially to perform in Newfoundland, I’m sure there will be some controversy there but we hope to set straight that a lot what people think they know of the story is invented.” She said that it is a huge responsibility and an honour to be portraying Shanawdithit but it has it’s challenges. “There are no Beothuk people…
