National Indigenous Peoples Day…meant for celebration of who?

National Indigenous Peoples Day is upon us and country wide the history, culture and contributions of Indigenous peoples to the country now called Canada are being marked. It’s a celebratory day giving everyone a chance to learn about Indigenous people. That is people Canada decides are Indigenous people. Ironically as the Liberal government pushes forward with claims of reconciliation, recognizing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples this government still decides who Indigenous people are and is prepared to push amendments to the Indian Act in Bill S-3 into force before the coming federal election. Bill S-3 centres on amendments that will eliminate remaining sex-based discrimination within the Indian Act, legislation created by Canada. It received Royal Assent over a year ago.
