The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) has a message for Indigenous voters in the coming federal election and it’s simple. AFN leader Perry Bellegarde says “get out and vote.” He believes increasing numbers of First Nation voters translates into controlling seats in the coming election and as a result the government’s focus. In the 2015 federal election the number of Indigenous voters soared to 61.5 per cent (the number of eligible on reserve voters who cast ballots in 2015) from 42 per cent in 2008, a 20 per cent increase.
