Grand Erie District School Board dropping Ryerson school name

BRANTFORD, ONT-Areas surrounding Six Nations are stepping away from historical figures whose actions contributed to the cultural genocide of Indigenous nations. The Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB) is looking for suggestions from the community to rename Ryerson Heights Elementary School. “We’re committed to building a culture of learning, well-being, and belonging,” JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education for Grand Erie said. “As part of our vision and journey together to reconciliation, this is a teachable moment. We have the opportunity to understand history, recognize the importance of culture, and engage school and community voice in the process of renaming to create a safe and welcoming learning environment.” Ryerson Heights Elementary School was named after Egerton Ryerson, and opened in west Brant, in Brantford in 2006.
