The vigil took place at Brandon\u2019s Riverbank Discovery Centre at sunset, as dignitaries and community members gathered to mark her passing. The event included drumming and a smudging ceremony. \u201cShe inspired people. Everybody,\u201d said Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett. \u201cShe did really want the best for the people she was leading.\u201d Fawcett described Merrick as charismatic and great at uniting people. \u201cShe had the ability to make everyone comfortable,\u201d he said. \u201cHer humour was contagious. She really was of the people.
