According to the QIA, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans\u2019 tentative plan to give the fishing licences to the Nova Scotia-based Mi\u2019kmaq First Nations coalition undercuts Nunavut\u2019s economy and the economic well-being of Inuit. \u201cInuit access to the commercial fishery still significantly trails the access enjoyed by southern jurisdictions \u2014 this has tangible impacts on Inuit and Nunavut\u2019s economy and undermines Canadian security in the Arctic,\u201d QIA President Olayuk Akesuk said on Dec. 9.
