Some hospitals were located in or near Indigenous communities, and others in urban areas. The closest Indian Hospital to Kenora was the Sioux Lookout Indian Hospital, which opened in 1949 and operated until 1996. The next closest was the Squaw Bay Indian Hospital, which operated out of Thunder Bay.
