There were no houses, he said – \u00a0just the church and Hudson\u2019s Bay \u00a0Company, which only sold supplies to the then-community of 200. “Everyone else who was in Naujaat were in igloo sod-huts or tents in \u00a0the summertime,” he said. “They only survived by hunting and so we were \u00a0like that until the (federal) government came along in 1963 and built \u00a0what were called \u2018matchboxes\u2019.” Those matchboxes, as Anawak describes them, measured 16 ft. x 24 ft. “That was the first time that Inuit in Naujaat moved into houses,” he \u00a0said. “Most of the people at the time… <\/p>\n
