It was so different to everything I later learned about that was outside my home community. My first language is Inineemoon, or as its known in the English language as \u2018Cree\u2019. We never referred to ourselves as \u2018Cree\u2019. That was a descriptor that was applied to us by European cultures. We knew ourselves and our people as Ininew, our word for \u2018people\u2019 and our language as \u2018Inineemoon\u2019, which translates as \u2018language of the people\u2019.
