Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the Chiefs of Ontario reached a nine-year $8.5 billion agreement with the federal government earlier in 2025 that is designed to give communities control over child welfare in their First Nations. The Ontario-specific deal came as the Assembly of First Nations voted down a national settlement in October 2024.
