Peachland evacuees were able to return home last week but remained under evacuation alert. It’s one thing to ask people to leave in a hurry, but it’s another to give them somewhere to eat and sleep and try to find some semblance of normalcy in their lives. That’s where Emergency Support Services (ESS) comes in. ESS is a not-for-profit organization funded by the provincial government to provide short-term support, including food, shelter and clothing, to people whose lives have been turned upside down by emergencies such as this summer’s spate ofwildfires.
