Cochrane, who’s currently serving as a city councillor, was the first one to announce his candidacy and said he thinks he’s the right person for the job. “I believe Yellowknife deserves a city that gets the fundamentals right, spends responsibility and plans for the long term, and I think I’m the person who can do that,” he said. Cochrane is a born-and-raised Yellowknifer, a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and its Metis. He said his background gives him a unique ability to understand and address Yellowknife’s needs, if elected mayor.
