The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlined a five-year bilateral pact that reinforces the inherent rights of both nations to trade freely with one another regardless of any trade restrictions imposed by Canada or the U.S. MCK Grand Chief Cody Diabo says the agreement represents an important first step in reviving the pre-colonial trade networks that existed among First Nations across Turtle Island. “European records will probably say the contrary because that’s the way they like to keep us dependent on them,” Diabo said.
